The United States will begin stepping back from its role as mediator in peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, according to a statement by State Department Press Secretary Tammy Bruce.
Speaking at a press briefing, Bruce said that Washington “will gradually reduce its involvement” in the talks, citing a lack of progress and shifting diplomatic priorities. While she did not explicitly announce a complete withdrawal, her remarks were interpreted by reporters as confirmation that the U.S. is exiting the negotiation process.
Bruce emphasized that the United States remains committed to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and continues to coordinate with international partners, but will no longer lead mediation efforts.
No official timeline for the transition was provided. The announcement comes amid growing divisions among Western allies over the path to a political resolution of the war.
