The United States has requested information from Egyptian officials regarding the status of Israeli-American hostage Idan Alexander, who has been held in Gaza since October 2023.
The request follows a statement by Hamas claiming it lost contact with the unit guarding Alexander due to an Israeli airstrike. The group said it could not confirm whether he is alive.
Alexander, a 20-year-old dual citizen of Israel and the U.S., was kidnapped during the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel. He is one of several American nationals believed to still be held in Gaza.
U.S. officials have urged Egypt and Qatar to provide clarity on the hostage’s condition as part of ongoing mediation efforts. The Biden administration reiterated its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
As of April 17, there has been no official confirmation of Alexander’s current status.
