The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under the administration of Donald Trump has announced that federal assistance of at least $1.9 billion will only be provided to states and cities if they pledge not to support boycotts of Israeli companies.
According to FEMA documents, in order to receive funding, local authorities must confirm that they do not participate in cutting commercial ties with Israeli companies. The funds are intended for financing emergency response equipment, paying specialists, and securing backup power sources.
Out of the total amount, approximately $553.5 million will be distributed among cities for anti-terrorism programs. New York is expected to receive the largest share, about $92.2 million.
The US Department of Homeland Security stated that the boycott of Israel contradicts federal anti-discrimination policy and is considered a form of antisemitism. While about 34 states have already passed their own laws against the BDS movement, FEMA’s requirement reinforces this position at the federal level.
The American Jewish Committee welcomed the decision, saying it reaffirms the United States’ commitment to supporting its ally in the Middle East.
