Vice President J.D. Vance confirmed in a recent interview that he is fully prepared to take over presidential duties if necessary, but emphasized that he believes President Donald Trump remains fit to lead the country.
Speaking to USA Today, Vance was asked directly whether he would be ready to step in as president “if, God forbid, there’s a terrible tragedy.” His response was unequivocal: “Absolutely.” He went on to say that while such a situation is not anticipated, his time in the role has equipped him to handle the responsibility.
“You have to be ready for the job,” Vance said. “I’ve been vice president for over 200 days. I’ve had a lot of time with the president. I’ve had a lot of time in the White House, in the West Wing, and I think I’d be ready to step up if called upon.”
At the same time, Vance moved to reassure the public about President Trump’s condition, noting that he believes the president is in good health and capable of completing his term.
“I feel very confident the president of the United States is in good shape, is going to serve out the remainder of his term, and do great things for the American people,” he added.
Although there’s no indication of any current health emergency, Vance’s comments come amid broader public focus on President Trump’s age and health. At 79, Trump is the oldest sitting U.S. president in history.
The White House has pushed back on recent media speculation, and Trump himself has dismissed concerns as politically motivated. Still, Vance’s steady visibility and rising national profile have drawn interest from political analysts, especially regarding the future of Republican leadership.
Earlier this week, President Trump told supporters at a private gathering that Vance is “most likely” to carry the MAGA movement forward beyond 2028, sparking fresh talk of a possible endorsement down the line.
“He understands the mission. He’s smart, tough, and loyal,” Trump reportedly said, according to Time.
The former Ohio senator has not announced any plans to run for president in 2028 but is widely viewed as one of the key figures in Trump’s inner circle and a likely contender should he choose to run.
