In a sweeping move that underscores growing tensions between the Trump administration and U.S. academic institutions, President Donald Trump has ordered a freeze on new student visa applications and terminated federal contracts with Harvard University, citing concerns over ideological bias and national security.
The White House announced on Tuesday that all U.S. embassies will halt new F-1 and J-1 student visa interviews until further notice. Officials claim the move is necessary to implement “enhanced vetting procedures,” including expanded review of applicants’ social media history, political affiliations, and foreign funding sources.
At the same time, President Trump signed an executive directive instructing federal agencies to terminate or suspend ongoing research and education contracts with Harvard University, a move that could affect over $100 million in federal grants. In remarks from the Rose Garden, Trump criticized Harvard as “a center of anti-American indoctrination” and accused the university of “harboring radical elements that oppose American values.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the visa freeze will primarily impact new applicants for the upcoming academic year but will not affect currently enrolled international students. DHS also emphasized that applicants from countries on the administration’s “watch list” will be subject to retroactive review.
In response, Harvard University issued a statement rejecting the administration’s accusations and confirmed that it will challenge the contract cancellations in federal court. “This action undermines the core principles of academic freedom and international exchange,” said Harvard President Alan Garber. “We will vigorously defend the right of students and scholars to engage in research without political interference.”
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) condemned the administration’s move as “a dangerous politicization of education” and vowed to support legal challenges.
