China Mobile has announced a major breakthrough in the development of sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks. The company has launched its first experimental 6G network, consisting of 10 base stations of varying sizes. The announcement was made on July 24 at the China Internet Conference.
According to Cheng Jianjun, Deputy General Manager of China Mobile, the company invested 39.1 billion yuan (around $5.4 billion) into research and development in 2025. China Mobile is also involved in four national science and technology programs, achieving breakthroughs in ten key areas related to 6G.
During the trials, data transmission speeds reached up to 280 Gbps—more than 14 times faster than the theoretical maximum of 5G. At that speed, a 50-gigabyte file could be transferred in less than two seconds.
