China’s leading national online education platform has reached 164 million registered users, marking a major milestone in the country’s push to digitize and expand its education infrastructure. The figure was disclosed in the “White Paper on Smart Education,” published by China’s Ministry of Education on May 16, 2025.
The platform, designed to provide equitable access to quality learning resources across all regions of China, has grown rapidly in recent years. It now offers over 86,000 digital courses, covering all stages from primary education to vocational and adult learning. According to the white paper, the initiative has helped bridge the educational gap between urban and rural communities.
Officials cited the integration of AI-driven personalized learning, real-time performance tracking, and immersive virtual tools as key drivers of user engagement. The government has also emphasized the platform’s role in supporting education continuity during natural disasters, public health crises, and geopolitical disruptions.
The white paper outlines a five-year roadmap for the platform, including expanded partnerships with global universities, upgraded cloud infrastructure, and increased multilingual support to attract international users.
China’s Ministry of Education reiterated its commitment to using smart education as a tool for national modernization, technological competitiveness, and global influence.
