Google Photos turns 10 with major redesign and new AI tools

To mark the 10-year anniversary of Google Photos, the tech giant is rolling out one of the app’s most significant updates to date. The redesigned image editor brings advanced AI-based tools previously exclusive to Pixel 9 users, along with a new sharing interface and personalized editing suggestions powered by machine learning.

One of the standout features is Reimagine, an AI tool that allows users to modify photos using text prompts—for example, replacing a cloudy sky with a sunny one or adding seasonal elements like autumn leaves. Another tool, Auto Frame, intelligently suggests optimal cropping or expands the image canvas using generative AI, similar to the “Expand” tool in Snapseed.

The update also introduces AI Enhance, which generates up to three customized editing suggestions per image. These options combine improvements like sharpening, contrast adjustment, and object removal, allowing users to choose the most appealing result with a single tap.

In addition, QR-based album sharing makes its debut, enabling users to share photo collections quickly by generating scannable QR codes—streamlining collaboration and content exchange between devices.

According to Google, the updated features will begin rolling out to non-Pixel Android devices over the coming weeks. iOS users will receive access later this year.
