Google Upgrades Android Auto With Browser and Video Support

At its annual I/O 2025 developer conference, Google unveiled major upgrades to Android Auto, transforming it from a navigation and communication tool into a more comprehensive in-car entertainment system. For the first time, the platform will support web browsers and video apps directly on the vehicle’s screen.

Until now, Android Auto has been limited to apps for navigation, music, messaging, and smart device control. But starting with version 14.1, users will be able to launch a web browser in the car. Select vehicles will also support video playback — though only while parked, a safety precaution to prevent driver distraction.

To access these features, a phone running Android 16 or higher will be required.

The new additions build on Google’s efforts to make Android Auto a smarter, more personalized platform. Earlier beta versions already included casual games like Angry Birds, as well as communication tools for reviewing calendars and past messages.

Google also plans to introduce Quick Share integration, allowing users to instantly transfer content from their phones to the car display. A simplified sign-in process is also in the works to further streamline the user experience.
