Most people are polite to AI chatbots – new survey

In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly permeates daily life, a notable trend has emerged: users are exhibiting politeness toward AI chatbots. Recent surveys indicate that approximately 70% of individuals incorporate courteous phrases like “please” and “thank you” when interacting with AI systems  .

Fear of AI Retaliation?

Interestingly, about 12% of these polite users admit their courtesy stems from a tongue-in-cheek fear of a future “robot uprising”  . While this may seem humorous, it underscores the anthropomorphic perceptions people have toward AI, attributing human-like qualities and potential for retribution to machines.

Politeness Enhances AI Performance

Beyond social considerations, politeness appears to have practical benefits. Studies have found that polite prompts can improve the quality of AI responses by up to 30%  . This enhancement is attributed to the AI’s design to mirror human communication patterns, where courteous language often elicits more detailed and accurate information.

The Cost of Courtesy

However, this widespread politeness isn’t without cost. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that responding to polite interactions incurs significant expenses, stating that the company spends “tens of millions of dollars” annually on electricity to process these additional tokens . Despite the financial implications, Altman considers it a worthwhile investment, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a user-friendly AI experience.

Cultural and Generational Perspectives

Attitudes toward AI politeness vary across demographics. A Talker Research poll found that 48% of Americans believe AI deserves to be spoken to politely, with younger generations, particularly Gen Z, leading in courteous interactions . This trend suggests a cultural shift in how society perceives and engages with AI technologies.

Conclusion

The inclination to be polite to AI reflects broader human tendencies to attribute social norms to non-human entities.

While the fear of a robot uprising may be more fiction than fact, the benefits of courteous interactions with AI—ranging from improved responses to fostering positive communication habits—are tangible. As AI continues to evolve, maintaining respectful engagement may not only enhance user experience but also shape the future dynamics between humans and machines.
