Thailand has announced the temporary closure of its renowned Similan and Surin Islands from May 16 to October 14, 2025, as part of an annual conservation effort aimed at allowing the marine ecosystems to recover from the impacts of tourism and to ensure visitor safety during the monsoon season.
The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation stated that the closure is essential to maintain the balance of the marine ecosystem, reduce the impact of tourism, and allow nature to recover. The islands, located in the Andaman Sea, are particularly popular among divers and day-trippers, especially during the dry season when numerous excursion boats visit the snow-white beaches daily.
Upon reopening on October 15, a new electronic ticketing system will be implemented for six marine national parks, including the Similan and Surin Islands. Visitors will be required to purchase tickets online in advance, providing their passport numbers. The exact costs of the tickets have not yet been announced.
Additionally, the famous Maya Bay on the uninhabited island of Phi Phi Leh will also be closed to visitors from August 1 to the end of September to allow its fragile ecosystem to recover from tourist influx. The bay gained international fame after being featured in the film “The Beach” starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
