A Road With a “Surprise”: India Builds a 90-Degree Bridge That Can’t Be Used

A bridge in India’s Madhya Pradesh state has become a national embarrassment after officials discovered it was constructed at a 90-degree angle, making it impossible for vehicles to cross safely.

The bridge, which took 10 years to build and cost about 200 million rupees (approximately $2.4 million), was meant to improve local connectivity. Instead, it turned into a bizarre engineering failure that has sparked outrage and ridicule across the country.

According to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, an internal investigation led to the dismissal of eight engineers, including two chief engineers from the Public Works Department.

Photos and videos shared on Indian social media platforms show a sharp turn in the middle of the bridge, forcing a near-right-angle maneuver — an impossible feat for any car or truck to perform.

Authorities are now scrambling to find experts capable of redesigning and rebuilding the structure. In the meantime, the bridge remains closed and stands as a stark symbol of poor oversight and corruption in public infrastructure projects.

The story has drawn widespread attention, with many Indians using it to highlight broader issues in government accountability and quality control.
