At Least 21 Killed in Russian Missile Strike on Ukrainian City of Sumy

On Sunday, April 13, 2025, a Russian ballistic missile strike targeted the city center of Sumy in northern Ukraine, resulting in at least 21 fatalities and injuring 83 others, according to Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. The attack occurred around 10:15 a.m. local time, coinciding with Palm Sunday celebrations.

The missiles struck a central area of the city, affecting civilians who were in the street, vehicles, public transport, and buildings. Videos from the scene showed bodies on the ground, a destroyed bus, and burnt-out cars amidst debris and smoke.

Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar confirmed the casualties and described the attack as a “terrible tragedy” for the community.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike, stating that “dozens” had been killed and wounded, and called for a stronger international stance against Russia.

The missile strike occurred shortly after Russian and Ukrainian diplomats accused each other of violating a U.S.-brokered agreement to pause strikes on energy infrastructure, highlighting ongoing tensions and challenges in negotiating an end to the conflict.
