On April 28, 2025, a massive power outage struck Spain and Portugal, leaving millions of residents without electricity. The blackout began around 12:30 PM local time and caused major disruptions in transportation, communications, and essential services. Some parts of France also experienced issues.
According to Red Eléctrica Española (REE), electricity demand suddenly dropped from 25,184 to 12,425 megawatts, suggesting a severe breakdown in the power grid. Train services, including high-speed AVE lines, were suspended, and Madrid’s metro system was halted. Traffic lights went dark, leading to chaos on the streets.
Mobile networks and internet connections were also disrupted in several areas. Hospitals faced difficulties in providing critical care due to the power failure, raising concerns for patient safety.
The exact cause of the blackout has not yet been officially confirmed. Red Eléctrica and the National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE) are investigating possible scenarios, including a cyberattack.
Power is now being gradually restored. The Canary Islands were unaffected thanks to their independent energy systems.
