Massive Car Carrier Fire Near Alaska Raises Concerns Over EV Transport Safety

On June 3, 2025, the cargo ship Morning Midas, transporting approximately 3,000 vehicles—including about 800 electric vehicles (EVs)—from Yantai, China, to Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico, caught fire in the North Pacific Ocean, approximately 300 miles southwest of Adak Island, Alaska.

The fire was initially observed in the section of the ship containing EVs. The crew of 22 attempted to extinguish the blaze using the ship’s CO₂ fire suppression system. However, the system was exhausted, and the fire reignited, leading to the crew’s evacuation.

All crew members were safely evacuated via lifeboat and rescued by the nearby merchant vessel Cosco Hellas. No injuries were reported.

The Morning Midas is managed by London-based Zodiac Maritime and sails under the Liberian flag. The company has stated that salvage operations are underway, with a tugboat deployed to support firefighting efforts.
