Massive Sandstorm Shuts Down Flights and Highways in Northern Mexico

A powerful sandstorm swept across northern Mexico on Saturday, leading to the closure of the General Roberto Fierro Villalobos International Airport in Chihuahua and significant sections of the Pan-American Highway. The storm severely reduced visibility, prompting authorities to halt air traffic and restrict road travel to ensure public safety.

The sandstorm’s intensity forced the suspension of all flights at Chihuahua’s main airport. Passengers experienced delays and cancellations as airport officials deemed conditions unsafe for takeoffs and landings. Travelers are advised to check with airlines for updates on flight schedules.

Sections of the Pan-American Highway, particularly between Empalme and Ciudad Obregón, were closed due to near-zero visibility caused by the storm. Authorities reported that the dust and sand accumulation made driving hazardous, leading to the temporary shutdown of these critical transportation routes.

Residents in affected areas faced challenges as the storm disrupted daily activities. Power outages were reported in parts of Guaymas and Empalme, and at least one vehicular accident was confirmed due to the poor visibility. Emergency services responded promptly to incidents, and no fatalities have been reported at this time.

The sandstorm was characterized by strong winds and dense dust clouds, creating hazardous conditions across the region. Meteorological agencies issued warnings advising residents to remain indoors, close windows, and avoid travel until conditions improved.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, working to clear affected roadways and restore normal operations at the airport. Travelers and residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels for the latest updates and safety advisories.
