U.S. officials said Ukraine deliberately did not inform Washington about its airstrike on a Russian airbase, knowing the site was considered part of Russia’s nuclear-capable strategic deterrent forces — a “red line” for the U.S. This was reported by The New York Times, citing administration sources.
According to the report, the Ukrainian operation carried out on Sunday has triggered intense discussions within NATO. The alliance is now assessing vulnerabilities in its air defense systems amid concerns that similar attacks could one day be launched against member states.
Although the full extent of the damage has not yet been confirmed, early estimates indicate that Russia’s Aerospace Forces suffered substantial losses. According to journalist Assaf Rosenzweig, Ukraine reportedly destroyed or seriously damaged up to 20 strategic bombers, including Tu-95 and Tu-160 aircraft. Also hit were transport planes and A-50 early-warning and control aircraft, which serve as airborne command centers.
If confirmed, the strike would mark one of the most significant blows to Russia’s strategic assets since the war began.
