Romania is voting today, May 18, 2025, in the second round of its presidential election. Far-right candidate George Simion,
leader of the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), is expected to face off against Nicușor Dan, the
independent and current mayor of Bucharest.
Simion emerged as the frontrunner in the first round held earlier this month, securing around 41% of the vote, while Dan
came in second with roughly 29%. Simion’s nationalist rhetoric and populist campaign have sparked both enthusiasm and
concern, as he promises to “restore Romanian pride” and challenge EU influence.
Polls suggest a tight race, but Simion holds a slight edge. A victory for him would mark the first time a far-right candidate
takes the presidency in post-communist Romania.
Official results are expected later tonight.
