Russia carried out a large-scale drone strike on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv overnight, killing two civilians and injuring at least 30 others, local officials said Saturday.
According to Dmytro Chubenko, a spokesperson for the Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s office, the number of wounded has risen to 30 following a wave of attacks using Iranian-made Shahed drones. The explosions caused significant destruction across multiple districts of the city.
“Twelve multi-story apartment buildings, 24 private homes, and 13 vehicles were damaged as a result of the strikes,” Chubenko said.
Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov confirmed that several areas of the city were hit, with preliminary reports indicating the use of Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The attacks targeted both residential and civilian infrastructure.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that Russian drones struck at least six separate locations. Among the damaged sites were a shopping center, residential high-rises, a medical facility, and an office building.
Two elderly residents — a man and a woman — were killed when drones struck their homes, trapping them under the rubble, Terekhov added.
Governor Syniehubov also noted that five children between the ages of 5 and 17 were injured in the attack. A 15-year-old girl remains in critical condition.
In a troubling development, a military hospital in Kharkiv was also targeted. According to Ukraine’s General Staff, Russian forces struck the hospital building, and preliminary reports indicate that several wounded service members receiving treatment were injured in the attack.
The latest assault highlights the continued intensity of Russian aerial strikes on Ukraine’s civilian population centers and underscores growing concerns about attacks on medical and humanitarian sites.
