In anticipation of Victory Day events on May 8 and 9, 2025, Berlin authorities have announced a temporary ban on the display of Russian and Soviet symbols at key Soviet memorials, including those in Treptower Park, Mitte, and Pankow districts. The prohibition extends to flags of Russia, the former USSR, Belarus, as well as symbols such as the “Z” and “V” associated with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The ban also encompasses military uniforms, the St. George’s ribbon, and the performance of wartime songs.
Berlin police stated that the measure aims to prevent potential confrontations and the propagation of war-related propaganda during the commemorations. Exceptions to the ban include diplomats, World War II veterans, and official delegations.
The Russian Embassy in Germany has condemned the ban, describing it as discriminatory and a hindrance to historical reconciliation.
