In a significant diplomatic development, Saudi Arabia’s Defense Minister, Prince Khalid bin Salman, visited Tehran on Thursday to deliver a personal message from King Salman bin Abdulaziz to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This visit marks the highest-level Saudi delegation to Iran since the two nations agreed to restore diplomatic ties in a 2023 agreement brokered by China.​
During the meeting, Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized the mutual benefits of strengthened relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, stating, “We believe that the relationship between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Saudi Arabia will benefit both countries.” He also expressed Iran’s readiness to assist Saudi Arabia in various fields, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation over reliance on external powers.​
Prince Khalid conveyed his satisfaction with the discussions, noting that he arrived in Tehran with the intention of expanding bilateral relations and cooperation across all sectors. He expressed hope that the constructive talks would pave the way for stronger ties between the two nations.​
The visit included meetings with Iran’s top military and political officials, including Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, and President Masoud Pezeshkian. These engagements focused on enhancing defense cooperation and addressing regional security concerns.​
This diplomatic outreach occurs ahead of scheduled talks between Iran and the United States in Rome concerning Tehran’s nuclear program. Saudi Arabia has expressed support for these negotiations, underscoring its commitment to resolving regional and international disputes through dialogue.
