Ukraine Captures Chinese Nationals Allegedly Fighting for Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on April 8, 2025, that Ukrainian forces have captured two Chinese nationals who were allegedly fighting alongside Russian troops in the Donetsk region.

According to President Zelensky, the Ukrainian military engaged a group of six individuals identified as Chinese citizens; two were taken into custody. The captured individuals were reportedly found with identification documents, bank cards, and personal items confirming their identities.

“We have information suggesting that there are many more Chinese citizens in the occupier’s units than just these two,” Zelensky stated.

In response to this development, President Zelensky has directed Ukraine’s Foreign Minister to urgently contact Beijing for clarification on China’s stance regarding its citizens’ involvement in the conflict. He emphasized the broader implications, noting, “Russia’s involvement of China, either directly or indirectly, in this war in Europe is a clear signal that Putin intends to do anything but end the war. He is looking for ways to continue fighting.”

The captured Chinese nationals are currently under the custody of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), with ongoing investigative and operational procedures.

This incident raises concerns about the international dimensions of the conflict, especially considering China’s previously stated neutral position. While China has officially maintained a stance of non-involvement, reports have surfaced about Chinese companies supplying dual-use goods to Russia.

The presence of foreign nationals in the conflict is not unprecedented. Earlier reports indicated the deployment of North Korean troops to support Russian forces, highlighting the complex international entanglements in the ongoing war.
