A man in Chongqing, China, developed a severe fungal lung infection after regularly sniffing his dirty socks, according to multiple reports.
Identified by the pseudonym Li Qi, the man experienced persistent coughing fits that disrupted his sleep. After over-the-counter medications failed to alleviate his symptoms, he sought medical attention at the Southwest Hospital of the Army Medical University.
Medical examinations, including CT and MRI scans, revealed signs of infection in his right lung. A bronchoscopy confirmed the presence of aspergillosis, a lung disease caused by inhaling spores from the Aspergillus mold, which thrives in warm, damp environments.
Upon questioning, Li Qi disclosed his habit of smelling his used socks after work. Tests conducted on the socks confirmed they harbored the same fungal strain responsible for his infection.
Dr. Luo Hu, deputy director of the hospital’s respiratory department, explained that wearing shoes for extended periods creates a moist environment conducive to fungal growth. Inhaling spores from such environments can lead to infections, especially in individuals with compromised immune systems.
Li Qi responded well to antifungal treatment and was discharged after recovery.
