Chinese President Xi Jinping has begun a five-day visit to Southeast Asia, touring Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia from April 14 to 18, 2025. The trip comes as China aims to deepen regional economic cooperation amid rising trade tensions with the United States.
During his stop in Vietnam, Xi is expected to oversee the signing of around 40 agreements, including those related to railway infrastructure development and potential cooperation in defense and internal security.
In Malaysia and Cambodia, Chinese officials say the focus will be on expanding trade partnerships, investment in major infrastructure projects, and advancing China’s Belt and Road Initiative across the region.
Beijing has described the visit as a diplomatic effort to “deepen mutual trust and economic collaboration” with its southern neighbors.
